Chandertaal lake is accessible by road during summers. This road gets damaged due to excessive snowfall and has to be repaired every-year to resume traffic. Generally, Manali Kunzum Kaza road is opened first and then the Chandertaal road is cleared. When road till Kunzum Pass is open you can take your cars till Kunzum and then Trek to Chandertaal lake.
Kunzum Pass is the highest point on the Manali-Kaza Road, its about 15000 Feet (4590 mtr). There is trail ( to the right ) which starts near the Gompa at Kunzum Pass which will lead you to Chandertaal lake. Trek is around 9 Kms, first 2 kms is uphill and then gradual downhill till you reach the lake which is at 15000 feet (4300 mtr). You Get to see the lake after walking around 1km and then the lake is visible for most part of the trek.
During the trek you get the see the glaciers on your left. Some of them resembles the Highway lanes. Then you see the Samudri-Tapoo which is beyond Chandertaal lake on the left side of the lake. At multiple points during the trek you have to cross the glaciers and at times its slippery. Almost halfway you start to see the campsite and the parking which is close to the lake. This is the time when you feel at ease, lake is also clearly visible with blue water.
If you start around 10 AM from Kunzum Pass, you would reach the lake in around 3 hrs, afternoon is the best time to see the blue waters of the lake. After spending some time at the lake you may consider talking a round of the lake (4kms). Its worth the effort, on reaching the other side of the lake you will be able to see CB-13 peak in the background of the lake.
There are 2 more small lakes on the hillock between Chandra River and the Lake, the reflections of the peaks on a clear sky in these small lake are mesmerizing. This Hillock also offers a closer view of the glacial lake called SamudriTaapu. Once you soak in the views and the beauty of the Lake, you can head to the campsites which are around 2Kms south of the lake.
On the Next day, start early to Manali so that you don’t hit the flow of the streams that you have to cross on the roads, Generally the flow increases with the rising temperatures during the day.
